Healthy Harold and friends share top tips for how to tackle NAPLAN
Students across Australia have begun NAPLAN testing this week and Healthy Harold is on hand to help with practical tips for children managing test anxiety and big feelings
READING LEVEL: GREEN
Hi friends! If you’re in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9, this week marks the start of NAPLAN.
How are you feeling about NAPLAN?
Some students might feel nervous, some might feel excited, some don’t care at all.
Students all over Australia are doing NAPLAN. NAPLAN helps schools see how they are going and how they can best help all of us kids. They do this by asking kids all across Australia the exact same questions on the same day – that’s pretty cool, hey?
It also helps our teachers and families understand how we are going, what we know already and what we are still learning, because we are all different and everyone learns in their own time.
Take my friend, Boots. She’s really good at math. You give her two numbers and she can add, subtract, multiply, divide – it’s amazing!
Meanwhile, numbers make my friend Red dizzy. He’s incredible at reading, writing and spelling, though! Boots and I love getting tips from him.
That’s why school is so great. We learn about ourselves and each other. We also learn how to help ourselves and each other. These are important life skills that we learn from being with others, and they are just as important as the skills we check with NAPLAN.
If you are having some “big feelings” about NAPLAN, here are a few tips:
Your teacher will help you prepare for NAPLAN. This will help you get used to what it looks like and the sorts of questions you might find.
Take care of your body and brain. Get plenty of sleep, eat delicious and nutritious food for your brain and energy and have plenty of time to play so you can handle any “big feelings” you might have.
Reach out to our trusted people. Our family, teachers, and friends are there to support us and care for us. If you have any big feelings, they can be there to help you.
One last thing to remember is that doing new things like NAPLAN helps us to grow our resilience.
What is resilience? The video below shows some of my friends talking about what it means. Bye for now,
Healthy Harold
