Hi kids! Healthy Harold here, with some tips to keep you safe and happy these school holidays. Whether you’re having fun at home, at the park, the beach or even online, it’s super important to stay safe while enjoying yourself.
Hanging out with your friends is one of the best ways to pass the time in the school holidays, when the weather is warm and the days are long.
Do you love getting outside and riding your bike, scooter, skateboard or skates? Awesome! But don’t forget your helmet — it’s your brain’s best friend. Make sure it’s snug and clipped on tight. It’s a good idea to ride where there aren’t any obstacles to run into.
When crossing the road, always use a pedestrian zebra crossing or traffic lights. Stop and look right, left and right again before stepping out onto the road, and always hold a grown-up’s hand if they’re with you.
If you’re swimming, whether it’s in a pool, creek, dam or at the beach, always have a grown-up watching you. At the beach, make sure you only swim between the red and yellow flags — that’s where the lifeguards can see you best and help you if you need it.
Remember, the sun can be super strong in the Australian summer, even when it’s not too hot. Be sun safe with the Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide rule:
Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Seek shade, and Slide on your sunnies. Oh yeah, don’t forget to stay hydrated and sip on water throughout the day and munch on some healthy snacks.
If you’re out and about, never talk to strangers or go anywhere with someone you don’t know. If you ever feel unsure or scared, find a trusted grown-up to help you, like a parent, teacher or lifeguard.
I’m sure lots of you will spend time inside relaxing out of the heat too. The holidays are a great time to play games and chat with friends online, but let’s be smart about it.
Play age-appropriate games that are safe for you, take breaks often to rest your eyes and stretch your legs. Never talk to people you don’t know in real life, and if something makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, tell a grown-up you trust straightaway.
No matter where you are or what you’re doing, remember this: if you’re ever unsure, scared or in trouble, always ask a trusted grown-up for help.
Enjoy your holidays, have loads of fun, and stay safe!
I’ll see you next time with more tips and tricks.
