What triggered the Nepal-Tibet border flash flooding catastrophe?

A landslide has blocked a river in the Himalayan border region of Nepal and Tibet, unleashing a devastating flash-flooding event make worse by the mountainous terrain. RED LEVEL (YRS 7-12)

Rescue efforts continue following the catastrophic flash flooding event in the Himalayas.

A flash flood caused by a landslide stormed through the popular Himalayan border region of Nepal and China’s Tibet on Wednesday local time.

The waters were extremely powerful and came with little warning, likened to an inland tsunami, sweeping away buildings, cars and concrete bridges.

At the time of reporting, at least 160 people had tragically lost their lives and hundreds more remained missing, including more than 400 international tourists, among them at least 34 Australian citizens.

WHAT CAUSED THE FLASH FLOODING EVENT?
The cause of the deadly landslide and flood along the Nepal-Tibet border hasn’t yet been determined, but experts said the risk of such events is made worse by the extreme topography* of the Himalayas.

While it remains too soon to draw any firm links to climate change, there have been well-documented trends in the high mountain ranges of Central and South Asia, such as faster glacier melt, that have increased the likelihood of such hazards.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said an earthquake likely triggered a landslide that in turn blocked a river, sending water gushing downstream after it eventually broke through the blockage.

However, the US Geological Survey later said that while the event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, further analysis showed “the seismic* energy was instead generated by a landslide”.

A preliminary assessment by the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) found “no anomalies” from the Chinese side of the border.

“We believe a rock-ice avalanche* occurred in Nepal, blocking the Lhende river and causing the cascading flood event,” Sarthak Shrestha, a remote sensing and geo information analyst with the intergovernmental* institute, told AFP.

WHY WAS THERE LITTLE WARNING?
Hatim Sharif, a hydrologist* at the University of Texas San Antonio, told AFP one thing that stood out to him was the lack of rainfall beforehand.

“That defeats essentially every operational flood warning system in the world,” he said, explaining that it makes it extremely hard to warn people ahead of time.

He also said the combination of mud and water was “like liquid concrete” making it especially dangerous and hard to escape.

The only solution would be to climb up a hill, at least 20ft (6m), he estimated.

A possible long-term solution for building better warning systems could be to implement river level gauges that relayed changes to authorities in real-time, giving residents 20-30 minutes of warning, he said.

MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN
The Himalayas in South Asia include many of the world’s highest peaks and remaining glaciers. Its terrain includes steep slopes and lush valleys, making it vulnerable to flooding events and landslides.

A researcher at the UK’s University of Reading, doctoral candidate Dorothy Heinrich told AFP the mountainous terrain could intensify the power of flood surges caused by blockages.

“In these mountain environments, the rivers can be quite narrow in areas,” she said. “Anything that blocks them, be it an avalanche or landslide, will lead to a big accumulation of water, then it creates these incredibly fast floods.”

Qianggong Zhang, head of climate and environmental risks at ICIMOD, warned of the potential for a second flood because of an ongoing blockage upstream.

MELTING GLACIERS
Nepal is also prone to glacial lake outburst flood* (GLOF) — the sudden and catastrophic release of vast volumes of water from melting glacier-fed lakes.

One such catastrophe in July 2025, which came from China’s Gyirong County, then surged into Nepal’s Rasuwa District, though authorities have not yet said a GLOF was responsible for this event.

Human-caused climate change has meant extreme weather events like melting glaciers have become more common because of warming temperatures.

According to a report from media outlet the Associated Press, researchers in Kathmandu found that glaciers across the icy peaks of the Himalayas were melting faster. Data presented earlier in the year showed the rate of ice loss had doubled since 2000.

In the coming days and weeks, scientists around the world will investigate potential climate links through what are known as attribution studies*, which analyse how likely an event was in the fossil-fuel-warmed climate of today, versus the pre-industrial* era.

“We do know what climate change trends look like in the Himalayas,” Ms Heinrich said. “The high confidence of more heatwaves, glacial retreat*, permafrost* reduction, these sorts of things that can drive things like landslides and glacial outburst floods.”

She stressed, however, that a firm link could only be made through an event attribution study.
