Ashbury Public School turned its library into a storytelling wonderland when it took part in the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Great Book Swap.
The Sydney school’s principal Karen Morris said the school was inspired to get involved because “literacy is the foundation of effective communication and making sense of the world”.
“Our students know how privileged they are to have such a wonderful library, librarian and ready access to reading material,” she said.
Taking part in the annual ILF event also made students feel “so empowered to help Indigenous children on their literacy journey“, according to Ms Morris, who said the school playground was “full of children enjoying their books” after the event
“We hope that our friends living in remote communities across Australia feel much joy when they receive their new books,” Ms Morris said. “Thanks to the ILF for a wonderful initiative.”
Participating schools can win a virtual visit from beloved children’s author and ILF ambassador Andy Griffiths simply by hosting a Great Book Swap and submitting their funds by 1 November 2024.
Griffiths’ visit will be a digital livestream with all participating schools. If schools cannot attend on the day, they will receive a recording they can watch at any time.
